SWADHIKAR
Background of the Project
Disability has been a much neglected sector throughout the world for many years. In countries like India, which isstruggling to meet the basic needs like food, shelter and health for a major part of its children and citizens, it is only natural tha t the issues like disability would take a back seat.
Since the International Year of Disabled in 1981, India has witnessed a growing change in the attitude towards persons with disabilities and the enactment of persons with Disability Act and The National Trust Act. Although there are certain indications of changes in the outlook of the state, but on the whole the scenario has not yet changed significantly.
| 1. |
The persons with disabilities are still segregated from the main stream of life. |
| 2. |
Lack of awareness on disability in common mass is still prevailing. |
| 3. |
Though there are some officially recognized rights, they are non existent in real life. |
| 4. |
Parents and other family members are also not sufficiently conscious about their role and responsibility. |
Protecting the rights of these children and persons, training them as far as possible to make them contributing members of the society, making them aware of their own rights and responsibilities to enable them to advocate for themselves someday and ensuring participation of parents and well wishers in the whole process is the sole objective of SWADHIKAR.

It aims to explore different aspects research study with such persons namely their participation and ability to face ordeals, disaster management, their intelligence, tolerance etc. Partner believes that adventure is not the exclusive domain of the able bodied and thus aims to inculcate interest and enthusiasm among the mentally challenged too.
